A coalition of leading aviation associations, including the Cargo Airline Association (CAA), sent a letter to key committee and congressional leaders advocating for enhanced funding to strengthen and modernize America’s air traffic control (ATC) system.
The letter calls on Congress to collaborate with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to ensure the national airspace has a safe and efficient ATC system by providing direct, essential, and predictable resources to the Airport and Airway Trust Fund. These funds are critical for addressing necessary equipment, facility and system maintenance, and modernization projects.
“We commend the administration and the congressional authorization and appropriations processes for providing funding to help keep our national airspace safe and competitive. More must be done to not only maintain and sustain the ATC system but also to modernize it,” the coalition emphasized.
The coalition drew attention to the adverse effects of historic underinvestment in aviation equipment and systems, including the lack of preventive maintenance, outdated facilities, and the delayed implementation of NextGen programs.
“FAA air traffic control facilities have exceeded their expected lifespan. Every ARTCC [Air Route Traffic Control Center] and more than a quarter of all FAA facilities are at least 50 years old, with many in need of replacement,” the letter highlighted.
The letter urged an open dialogue between Congress, the FAA, industry partners and stakeholders to ensure a more predictable and sustainable investment and resource plan for current and long-term modernization projects.
